Also known as fetishes, the stone carvings of animals created by artists at Zuni and other Pueblo groups in New Mexico hold spiritual meaning. At MNA, we to use the broader term carving since this more accurately reflects contemporary examples representing animals or figures, some of which are much larger than the typical palm-size carving and often as large as 8 inches tall. Traditional animals including bear, wolf, eagle, mountain lion, wildcat, falcon, or owl can be found in the more than 1,100 examples in the MNA collections, but you will also find skunks, pigs, dolphins, dragons, and even a skeleton on a skateboard.
