The terms kachina and katsina have been used interchangeably at MNA to catalog the collection of carved figures that were originally used as tools to teach Pueblo children about the katsina religion. The collection at MNA includes approximately 1,400 carvings, ranging from early examples from the turn of the last century to very contemporary pieces created by Hopi and other Pueblo carvers in the last 10-20 years. The art form has evolved greatly over the last 100 years as represented in our collection, often under pressure from non-Native collectors for carvers to create more intricate work.
